Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about CMR Robotics programmes, getting started, and the competitive robotics pathway in Auckland.
Classes & Programmes
What age are robotics classes suitable for?
Our robotics classes are suitable for students aged 10 and up. No prior experience is required for beginners. We have structured entry points for students at all levels.
What programmes does CMR Robotics offer?
We offer robotics classes, coding classes (Java, Python, C++), 3D printing, and a competitive robotics pathway for teens. Holiday intensives run during school breaks.
Do you run holiday programmes?
Yes. CMR Robotics runs intensive robotics and coding holiday programmes during Auckland school breaks. Contact us to find out about upcoming dates.
What is the difference between your beginner and advanced programmes?
Beginner programmes focus on foundational skills — basic robot building, introductory coding, and engineering concepts. Advanced programmes prepare students for competitive robotics with real engineering standards, Java programming, and structured team environments. FTC is one of the ways those standards are tested.
Competitive Robotics & FTC
What is FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC)?
FIRST Tech Challenge is an international robotics competition for students aged 12–18. For us, it is one of the clearest ways to put real robotics, software, teamwork, and judged engineering standards into practice.
Is FTC only for advanced students?
FTC suits students who are ready for a more serious technical commitment. Some students join with no prior experience and build into it over one to two years. We discuss readiness during the intake process so families can understand whether competitive robotics is the best fit.
Does CMR Robotics attend international FTC competitions?
Yes. CMR Robotics organises annual trips to the FTC World Championship for qualifying teams. We have competed internationally and hold multiple consecutive national titles.
Does CMR Robotics run FTC competitions in New Zealand?
Yes. CMR Robotics is one of New Zealand's leading FTC organisers and runs national competitions that give NZ students a domestic qualification pathway to the World Championship.
