FTC vs VEX vs FLL
A plain-English comparison for parents deciding between FTC, VEX, and FLL pathways for robotics students.
Parents are often confronted with a confusing list of robotics acronyms. The right pathway depends on age, technical readiness, and whether the student is looking for playful introduction, structured systems work, or a more demanding competition environment.
FLL is often a strong starting point for younger learners. FTC tends to suit students ready for more serious engineering, software, and judged competition work. VEX can also be a strong competition pathway, especially where programming support and team infrastructure are available.
For our programme, FIRST and FTC are the primary competition focus because they align well with a broader engineering and communication pathway. That said, we also support students in robotics and coding outside FTC, including some VEX-related programming support.
